DAVID SMITH - Monday, October 10, 2011
Anton Peterlin was the only American in action in England during the weekend, as Frank Simek, Mike Grella, Jemal Johnson and Jon-Paul Pittman were all out of action for their respective teams.
Wycombe Wanderers 1 - 1 Walsall
Anton Peterlin played the full 90 minutes in the Walsall midfield on Saturday, as a late goal off of a Wycombe defensive miscue helped them to snatch a point on the road.
Entering the game, both teams were languishing in the lower reaches of the League One standings, with Wycombe in the relegation zone just one point off the bottom spot and Walsall just two points in the clear.
Wycombe were close to taking the lead seven minutes before the half, when midfielder Stuart Beavon slipped around Walsall's Adam Chambers and struck a low shot that James Walker was able to scoop up with little issue.
Seeking to change up the flow, Wycombe head coach Gary Waddock put attacking midfielder Ben Strevens into the game, and the move paid off as he gave his team the lead five minutes after the break.
Beaven created space on the right side of the area and hit a cross to the edge of the six-yard box, where Rowlands struck it into the upper right corner for 1-0.
In the 65th minute, striker Alex Nicholls entered the field for Walsall, and was able to even the score with nine minutes left in the game thanks to an error by Wycombe's goalscorer Strevens.
Nicholls ran onto a weakly-hit back-pass from Strevens in the Wycombe half of the field and promptly rounded keeper Nikki Bull before burying his shot into the empty net to secure the draw.
Walsall climb one spot to 18th with the point, and could jump several more places up the League One standings should they find a way to beat visiting fifth-place team Preston on Saturday.
Frank Simek is out injured and did not suit up for Carlisle in their 2-2 home draw against Brentford on Saturday. Mike Grella was not in uniform for Brentford.
Jemal Johnson was not selected in the gameday squad for Southend on Saturday for their 3-1 road win over Crewe Alexandra in League Two action.
Jon-Paul Pittman did not suit up for Crawley on Saturday for their narrow 1-0 road win at Northampton Town.
