DAVID SMITH - Friday, September 30, 2011
The Danish Cup fourth round was set on Friday, giving Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland a rematch of their last two victorious finals and a tough trip to Copenhagen for Clarence Goodson and Brøndby.
None of the five teams involving Americans suffered defeat in the most recent round of games in the cup, and with the luck of the draw keeping all five teams apart and giving several favorable opponents, a heavy presence could be seen in the quarterfinals.
Clarence Goodson and Brøndby landed the unquestionably toughest possible matchup of the round, and will be forced to visit FC Copenhagen's home stadium of Parken to take on the three-time consecutive Danish league champions.
If there is any hope for Goodson and his teammates against the current leaders and likely champions of the Superliga, it is that Copenhagen have crashed out woefully at this stage of the cup in the previous two seasons, last year losing at home to AC Horsens by a 4-2 score, and one year before being crushed 5-0 by SønderjyskE.
Perhaps the tastiest matchup of the round is the visit of FC Midtjylland to Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland, an early re-match of the last two Danish Cup finals.
Parkhurst and his teammates came out victorious in each of those two games to earn the first two pieces of silverware in club history, but will need to be wary of a Midtjylland squad which will certainly have a mind for revenge.
Conor O'Brien was the hero of SønderjyskE's narrow 1-0 third-round win over lower league Svebølle BI, and his talents will certainly be called upon once more when they visit Hobro IK, a largely unfancied and mediocre team one division below.
Brad Rusin and Køge are suffering through a dismal league campaign, however have found solace in a relatively successful cup run, which most recently included a dramatic overtime victory over First Division heavyweights Esbjerg fB.
As their reward, they will visit another team playing one division below, and will likely be considered favorites against Roskilde BK.
Rounding out the draw is an all-First Division matchup between Viborg FF and FC Fredericia, however Viborg defender Babajide Ogunbiyi will miss the game as he is still recovering from knee surgery.
All games in this round are set to be played in midweek from October 25-27.
