CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON - Friday, September 2, 2011
Ligue 2 stragglers Lens thumped top-flight Evian out of the Coupe de la Ligue on Thursday night thanks to a late lone goal from Julien Toudic.
French-American Quentin Westberg returned to his spot between the posts after playing second trumpet for two games to coach Bernard Casoni's new favorite keeper Stephan Andersen.
Evian nearly took the lead four minutes before the break after Eric Tie Bi redirected a Cédric Barbosa free kick and smacked Lens keeper Guillermo Ochoa's frame.
The Lensois attack finally outsmarted Westberg in the 78th minute after developing a drive down the left side and to the top of the box, where Toudic delivered to the touchline for Ali-Azouz Mathlouthi. The Frenchman completed the give-and-go with a fine feed to the backpost for the header from Toudic to give the northerners the 1-0 win.
Evian regroup next Saturday for league action at Girondins de Bordeaux, where Andersen will likely return to the net in place of Westberg.
