MARTY SCOTT - Monday, August 8, 2011
DaMarcus Beasley earned a penalty in a losing effort for Pubela, while Herculez Gomez and Tecos could not make it two in a row again Tigres.
Estudiantes Tecos 0 - 1 Tigres
American striker Herculez Gomez started up top and went the full 90 for Estudiantes in a losing effort at home against Tigres.
In a game that saw very few scoring opportunities, the lone goal came in the 62nd minute when Tigres defender Israel Jimenez headed in a crossed ball from Brazilian teammate Danilinho in front of the six-yard box leaving no chance for Estudiantes goalkeeper Christian Martinez.
Gomez and company will regroup and prepare for the Saturday confrontation against crosstown rival Atlas at the Estadio Jalisco.
Tigres will take their unbeaten record to the Estadio Azteca on Saturday and take on Edgar Castillo and America.
Defender Jonathan Bornstein didn't make bench for Tigres.
Puebla 1 - 2 Jaguares
DaMarcus Beasley went the distance but Puebla FC couldn't hang on to an early first half lead as they fall at home to last place Jaguares.
Beasley helped put the hosts up in just the fourth minute after referee Erim Ramirez pointed to the spot after the American went crashing into the area. Jaguares defender Orlando Rincon was adjudged to have tripped the former PSV Eindhoven man, but replays showed that call was dubious at best.
Spanish forward Luis Garcia converted from ten yards out to give Puebla the early advantage.
Jaguares responded half an hour later when midfielder Edgar Andrade filtered a nice pass through the Puebla backline to fellow teammate Franco Arizala who fired it past helpless Puebla goalkeeper Mario Rodriguez.
Forward Jackson Martinez would put the game out of reach for the guests in the 74th minute when second half substitute Armando Zamorano played a lovely ball over the Pachuca defense for the Colombian to finish past the rushing keeper Rodriguez to seal the game.
Neither Frankie Lopez nor Adrian Ruelas were named to the roster for Jaguares.
Puebla and head coach Sergio Bueno travel to Tijuana and take on recently promoted Xolos at Estadio Caliente next Sunday while Jaguares return to Chiapas where will host fourth place Cruz Azul on a day earlier.
Edgar Castillo started in Club America's 2-0 loss to Barcelona in Dallas.
Jose Francisco Torres missed Pachuca's 2-1 defeat to Querétaro as he made his way to Pennsylvania for Wednesday night's match against Mexico.
