New USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann named his first roster ahead of next Wednesday's friendly against Mexico in Philadelphia.

As expected, the roster did not consist or many new players as Klinsmann is still admittedly getting himself familiar with the player pool.

The roster consists of 22 players with seven coming from MLS and 15 coming from abroad.

The US will be lead by regulars Tim Howard, Landon Donovan, and Carlos Bocanegra.

While most of the players have been regulars with the US national team there were some surprises. Bill Hamid has earned his first national team callup after a strong season with DC United.

Mexican-based players Michael Orozco, Edgar Castillo, and Jose Francisco Torres will also return to the team after long absences.

MLS players Heath Pearce and Kyle Beckerman have been away from the team for more than a year but will also travel to Philadelphia.

Notable absenses are Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Oguchi Onyewu, and Eric Lichaj.

In their last game, the USMNT fell to Mexico 4-2 in the final of the Gold Cup in what turned out to be the last game of Bob Bradley's five year tenure as head coach.

Glad to see the 3 called up from Mexico; they were pretty much ignored by Bradley. Agree that he should just rest Donovan and bring in someone else--maybe Charlie Davies or Deskerud or someone we haven't seen much lately.

Not loving seeing Clark and Beas buck up there....guess we will see if they can make something of themselvs.

@Mark WNY and @kevin- Demps is palying for Fulham as we speak and will more than likely be resting for this one.

@Julian You are kidding right?! Johnny B is an absolute scandal. Besides with Timmy and Cherundolo...who needs him!? Lichaj would be next in line anyway.

@Patrick Fitz Benny has kinda been out of the loop since joining the revs it seems. MLS is more important than a IF also.

Klinsmann has only a few days to select and coordinate the team. It is not clear how much of this roster relates to Klinsmann not wishing to bother players with important games or who are seriously fighting for a spot on their Euro teams.

I would hate for it to be seen as an advantage for a player to be selected PRECISELY because he is riding the bench at his Euro team (Bradley, Jones). That would be crazy.

I am glad to see some of the new names.

5 defensive kids seems a bit excessive. Maybe he will try Bradley in a more attacking role.

But everyone told me Bradley Jr. was gonna be gone!

Actually, I'm not as anti-young Bradley as so many seem to be on here. He's no Reyna, but he's seemed pretty solid every time I've seen him play, so it'd be great to clear him of the "Nepotism" shouters on here.

These are friendlies and it's the beginning of leage play and yes many players need the rest...so many of the friendly rosters...mex., costa rica, etc will be fresh faces mixed with old ones. Which is smart. He's got a year till WCQ begins and to find the 2014 usmnt identity.

Meaning don't read into too much or too early the absence of Dempsey or Altidore as both are obviously proven starters. Yes, Jozy asserted his role at the Gold Cup. Personally I would leave Donovan to rest and stay focused with LA. I like the roster minus Rico Clark and Beckerman.

jozy - just recovered from injury, likely also a request from his club
dempsey - has been given time off from his club (needs a rest), likely a request by fulham
lichaj - just coming back from injury
joe benny corona - seems to be leaning towards mexico. i wonder if klinnsy tried to call him and was rebuffed?
