PREVIEWS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Friday, July 22, 2011
In a busy weekend in Mexico, DaMarcus Beasley will look to lift Puebla on Saturday in his first game in the Primera Division when they visit Atlas while Jose Torres will lead Pachuca back to the top after a disappointing season last year.

Estudiantes Tecos - Toluca

American forward Herculez Gomez is looking to start off the season on a winning note with Estudiantes Tecos when they host Toluca on Friday night at Estadio Tres de Marzo.

Gomez signed with Tecos over the summer after playing last season with Pachuca.

While Gomez is likely to start up top for Tecos the biggest concern for the club is in the backline where the club conceded 34 goals last year which among the worst in the league.

For Toluca, they will enter into the new season under new coach Hector Hugo Eugui who was previously at Puebla. He will take over after the team disappointed last season and failed to make the playoffs.

Neither team is reporting any injuries at this time.

Pachuca - Santos Laguna

Coming off a rocky Clausura season in 2011, Pachuca are looking to get back on the right track in the 2011 Apertura when the play their first game on Saturday vs. Santos Laguna.

Jose Torres is expected to start for Pachuca in central midfield.

Both teams are coming off disappointing Clausura seasons where each failed to make the playoffs.

Pachuca will welcome the return of midfielder Andres Chitiva and goalkeeper Miguel Calero who both missed significant time due to injuries last season.

Club Tijuana - Morelia

After winning promotion to the Primera division, Club Tijuana will look to get off to a winning start in the country's top league when they host Morelia on Sunday.

Joe Corona was the hero for Club Tijuana last year and he will start for Tijuana.

The game will mark the first time ever that Tijuana has played in the Primera Division and the club will be looking to see that it's high power offense carries through into the higher league.

Morelia enter the game also coming off a strong season. In the most recent Clausura, they advanced all the way to the final before falling 3-2 on aggregate to Pumas.

Atlas - Puebla

After spending the past seven years in Europe, DaMarcus Beasley has taken his career to Mexico where he will look to boost Puebla's offense.

Beasley joined the club last month and is likely to be in action on Saturday when they visit Atlas. The 29-year old American winger has seen regular time for Puebla during the preseason.

Last season neither team made the playoffs.

Notes

Jonathan Bornstein will likely start the game on the bench for Tigres when they host Cruz Azul on Saturday.

Michael Orozco returns to the Mexican Primera league after spending time in the MLS. He will most likely be in the matchday 18 for San Luis when they visit Pumas UNAM on Sunday.

Edgar Castillo has seen significant action in the preseason upon his return to Club America after three consecutive loans. It is possible he sees some action for America when they host Queretaro on Sunday.

Adrian Ruelas went out on loan to Jaguares last month and should be in the matchday 18 for his new club when they host Monterrey on Sunday.

Memo to Edgar Castillo: If CF America doesn't play you this year, come home. You are better than to ride their bench, or any other in Mexico. You can school Jalil Anibaba in Chicago. Great talent this kid, but needs mentoring.

Greetings! Just a note about Marco Vidal. He has been starting and playing really well in the midfield with Leon FC in a very competitive Liga de Ascenso. They will be looking for the one and only promotion spot in the Primera Division as the season kicks off next Friday the 29th against the Correcaminos(Road-runners).
