DAVID SMITH - Tuesday, May 3, 2011
All Americans reached the next round of the Norwegian Cup, with Sean Cunningham finally making his debut for Molde, and Mikkel Diskerud and Stabaek overcoming a tough showing by their minnow opponents.
Holmlia SK 0 - 1 Stabaek IF
Mikkel Diskerud went the distance in Stabaek's midfield as they narrowly avoided embarrassment in posting a narrow 1-0 win at minnows Holmlia in the first round of the Norwegian Cup on Sunday.
The lone goal of the game came in the 34th minute as Jørgen Skjelvik slipped free of the defense after receiving the ball on the left side, and poked it past Holmlia keeper Marius Støvind, who had come off his line too early.
The win pushes Stabaek into the next round of the Cup in mid-May, however they first will try to improve on their sixth-place Tippeligaen standing on Sunday when they visit struggling FK Haugesund.
Eidsvåg IL 0 - 11 Molde FK
Both Josh Gatt and Sean Cunningham got the start for Molde in their 11-0 beat-down of lower-league team Eidsvåg IL, with the former going the distance and the latter playing the firt 72 minutes in the team's defense to help them reach the second round of the competition.
The result of the game was never really in doubt, however starting striker Mattias Moström made sure there was no question by first putting his team ahead in the second minute, then making it 2-0 in the 11th.
Fellow frontman Daniel Chima Chukwu added another pair in the 14th and 17th minutes to add further emphasis to their domination, before Jose Mota struck in the 19th minute and Christian Steen followed up three minutes later to make it 6-0 midway through the first half.
Eidsvåg amazingly buckled down and held the scoreline through the remainder of the first half and close to 15 minutes into the second, however a charge in the last 30 minutes saw Molde break into the double digits with seemingly little effort.
Chukwu grabbed his third of the game moments before the hour mark, then Mota picked up his second ten minutes later.
Thomas Holm brought Molde's total to nine goals in the 71st minute, just moments before Cunningham's debut came to a close as the left back was replaced by usual starter Vegard Forren.
Mota then completed his hat trick with ten minutes left, and Chukwu netted the team's 11th and final goal two minutes later.
Gatt will likely be on the field at some point while Cunningham will hope to also make it off the bench when they team hosts struggling reigning champions Rosenborg BK on Sunday.
Jonathan Borrajo was out of Ham-Kam's starting lineup as they rode a three-goal second half to beat lower-league hosts Moelven IL on Sunday.
Steve Clark was given the afternoon off to give the Hønefoss backup keeper some time on the field as the team went on the road to thrash Drammen FK by a 5-1 score.
Sandefjord backup keeper Colin Burns was not selected for action on Sunday as the team easily beat their hosts Husøy og Foynland IF by a 5-0 score to reach the second round of the Cup.
Neither defender Rhett Bernstein nor forward Kyle Helton participated for Mjøndalen IF in their first round 7-1 victory over IF Urædd.
Sogndal backup keeper Joseph Bendik did not suit up for his team as they came out victorious on their trip to Saga FK with a commanding 6-2 win.
