BRIAN SCIARETTA - Wednesday, March 16, 2011
US head coach Bob Bradley today announced the national team roster for the upcoming friendlies later this month against Argentina and Paraguay.

The US will be lead by Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan who will be playing together for the first time since the 2010 World Cup. Dempsey last played with the US team for a series of friendlies in October and Donovan was last with the team in August.

The US defense will be lead by team captain Carlos Bocanegra and right back Steve Cherundolo. Oguchi Onyewu, who recently joined FC Twente, will look to reestablish himself as a dominant force with the US team now that he is once again playing regularly at the club level. The US, however, will be without Clarence Goodson who recently broke a toe while training with his club, Brondby.

The US midfield will be boosted by Stuart Holden who is enjoying a breakout season with Bolton Wanders. Jermaine Jones, Michael Bradley, and Maurice Edu are all likely to see time in central midfield in the two games.

At forward, the US will be led by Jozy Altidore who has recently began to receive regular playing time with Bursaspor in Turkey. Joining Altidore will be New York Red Bull Juan Agudelo who notched his first USMNT goal in last November's 1-0 win over South Africa.

The most surprising callups to the team were David Yelldell who is having a strong season in Germany for Duisburg and will be looking to earn his first cap. Also joining Yelldell for his first cap will be Norwich City defender Zak Whitbread who for the better part of 18 months was sidelined with injuries before finally returning to health in late December.

In addition to Whitbread, promising young defender Timothy Chandler of German club Nurnberg has received his first call. Chandler has emerged as one of the best young players in the Bundesliga after making his senior team debut earlier this season.

The US will play Argentina on Saturday, March 26 at the Medowlands Stadium and will then take on Paraguay on Tuesday, March 29 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Change doesn't happen overnight guys! The Gold Cup is a very imporant tournament which other than giving braggin rights gives a ticket to the 2013 Confederations Cup. So BB needs to take the best 22 to that tournament even if he takes veterans who might not be in 2014. In regards to Torres vrs Klesjstan well Torres is playing horrible with Pachuca. I'm a fan of the kid but I think he found his ceiling. Klesjtan is also getting minutes in a better team and better environment.

I read in today's paper that Charlie Davis scored 2 for D.C. United yesterday (Saturday). Why isn't he there? Also, I think he should bring in more young blood in the back, like Omar Gonzalez from the Galaxy. Since Kljestan is in and out of the line up at Anderlicht, I agree that he should be looking at someone else instead. I think that Bradley's biggest weakness as coach is some of his personnel selections (remember Ricardo Clark in the World Cup).

Strange to see so many vets that prob won't make WC squad especially on D. I would think it's better to play the younger players. And I agree Dempsey needs to go up front to provide more firepower. Maybe Adu to replace injured Holden cause they lack creativity.

Why no Jose Torres? Club conflict? And for the love of God, why is Kljestan back in the mix"?? I thought we were done with him when he didnt make the side for the last world cup. I mean, how many times can a guy give the ball away, look completely uncomfortable with the ball and still be in the team?

Oleosmurf- agreed. I don't want that as our starting lineup but would like up see it at some point during the friendlies.

I would rather have dempsey and donovan on the wings. They play better with space. Both have long poor spells when up top in general. With 3 IMs it would allow both dempsey and donovan to make those runs when necessary and hopefully often.

with the team's strength clearly in the midfield, Dempsey should be moved up to forward. The World Cup showed how poor our strikers were and a 17 year old kid is not the answer (at least in the near future).

Dempsey and Altidore up top with Donovan, Holden, Bradley and Edu/Jones in the middle. Onyewu, Bocanegra, Cherundolo and Chandler in the back.
