DAVID SMITH - Friday, October 1, 2010
Jozy Altidore got the start in Villarreal's win over Club Brugge while Sacha Kljestan did not see the field for Anderlecht as they remained winless in the Europa League group stage.
Villarreal CF 2 - 1 Club Brugge
Jozy Altidore started at forward alongside teammate Giuseppe Rossi, playing 85 minutes as Villarreal rode a pair of goals to a win over Club Brugge on Thursday.
The win was perhaps more difficult for the Yellow Submarine to pull out than one would have expected, as they both dominated the run of play and had the advantage of playing against a ten-man Brugge team for the majority of the game.
Altidore got in the action early, forcing Brugge keeper Geert De Vlieger into a save after just five minutes, then again in the 18th.
Brugge midfielder Ronald Vargas made things difficult for his team after 26 minutes when he was sent off for throwing an elbow at Ángel López, and the hosts capitalized 15 minutes later as Joan Capdevila took the ball after a short corner and crossed it goalwards, where Rossi connected on the slide to give Villarreal the lead.
Brugge evened matters just before the half, as a cross by Jonathan Blondel following a free kick was smashed by Ryan Donk into Diego Lopez's goal from just beyond the penalty spot.
Villarreal pushed on following the break to restore their lead, and succeeded in doing so in the 56th minute, as Gonzalo rose above several defenders to head in a fine cross from Jefferson Montero.
The visitors were forced to resort to backup keeper Colin Coosemans when De Vlieger went down to injury two minutes later, however the youngster held his own for the remainder of the proceedings, with the final whistle awarding Villarreal the 2-1 win.
The win sees the team in third place in a tight group D, trailing Dinamo Zagreb by goal differential and Greek team PAOK by a single point. They will visit PAOK in their next group game on October 21, but first host Racing Santander on Sunday in La Liga action.
Sacha Kljestan was an unused substitute for Anderlecht as they fell to last place in Group G with a 1-0 loss on the road to Hajduk Split.
Freddy Adu was not a part of the Aris squad that lost 2-1 at Rosenborg.
