Greg Eckhardt and VPS were humbled in front of their home fans as visiting Honka came away with an impressive victory in weekend Veikkausliiga action.

VPS 1 - Honka 3

Eckhardt started in defense and went the full 90 minutes for the hosts in Sunday's match at a soggy Hietalahti Stadium in Vaasa.

Fellow American Brian Pope continues to recover from his shoulder injury and did not participate.

Honka opened the scoring in the 16th minute courtesy of Jussi Vasara who uncorked a bullet from outside the area that rattled off the bottom lip of the crossbar and into the net.

VPS were able to answer three minutes before halftime when Jussi Aalto took advantage of an atrocious error by the Honka defense.

Some miscommunication between a Honka defender and the goalkeeper gave Aalto an easy chip into goal over the out-of-position netminder who had come way off his line.

The visitors made amends for their blunder in the second half with two late strikes, the first of which came in the 81st minute.

Rasmus Schuller was left totally unmarked in front of the VPS goal and easily directed his header off a cross and into the net.

Just eight minutes later the second place team put the match out of reach when VPS inexplicably gifted them a goal.

VPS defender Jussi Äijälä's free kick from deep inside his own half went nowhere near another VPS player and was easily scooped up by Honka's Konsta Rasimus.

Äijälä made zero attempt to correct his enormous error giving Rasimus an easy two on none along with Hermanni Vuorinen.

Rasimus dished off to Vuorinen who easily tapped in a shot past VPS goalkeeper Kwon Jung-Hyuk.

VPS are now ninth in the league standings with 25 points and next visit Haka on September 11th.

Notes

Daniel Antunez is still injured and did not suit up in FC Inter's 1-0 loss at AC Oulu.
