Villarreal 5 - 0 Dnepr Mogilev

Jozy Altidore appeared in his first competitive match for Villarreal in 20 months as the Yellow Submarine torpedoed Dnepr Mogilev in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Altidore came on in the 74th minute for New Jersey-born Giuseppe Rossi in front of the home faithful at Estadio El Madrigal.

It was his first action in a competitive match for Villarreal since a December 14, 2008 1-0 loss at Sevilla.

Villarreal rolled from the opening whistle and it did not take long for them to get on the scoreboard as new arrival and World Cup winner Carlos Marchena flicked in Borja Valero's corner kick right by the near post to put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute.

Seven minutes later Santi Cazorla added a second when he volleyed in Cani's cross.

The festival of goals continued in the 35th minute when Valero gathered in Cani's pass and found himself in front of an open net for the easy tap-in goal.

Villarreal went into the dressing room at halftime with a four goal lead as Bruno played in a through ball to Cani who scored a goal of his own a minute before the break.

Just seconds after Altidore entered the match 16 minutes from time, the Spanish club added one for the thumb when Nilmar scored from just inside the penalty area.

Three minutes after the Brazilian struck, Altidore nearly added a sixth only to see Dnepr goalkeeper Ruslan Kopantsov summon up his best effort of the night and deny the American of finding the back of the net.

The former Hull City man thought he had another scoring chance brewing in the 84th minute however he was adjudged to be offsides even though replays showed otherwise.

The victory gives Villarreal a commanding five goal advantage heading into next week's return leg in Belarus.

Altidore and Villarreal are slotted to open their 2010-2011 La Liga campaign on Sunday the 29th at newly-promoted Real Sociedad.

Dominic Cervi kept the splinters warm as Celtic took a 2-0 first leg lead over Dutch entrants FC Utrecht.

Freddy Adu was not a part of the Aris team that took a 1-0 first-leg lead at home on Tuesday over Austria Vienna thanks to a 90th-minute goal from ex-MLSer Carlos Ruiz.
