ANDREW VORCE - Sunday, August 8, 2010
Frank Simek and Anton Peterlin both made starts at their new clubs and walked away with victories while Jon-Paul Pittman came off the bench to score a wonder goal to help Wycombe off to a dream start in League Two.

Carlisle United 2 – 0 Brentford

Frank Simek found first team action by way of Carlisle United and helped push his squad on to a strong opening day victory over Brentford.

It was all forward motion from United as debutant striker Craig Curran twice struck the wood work in the opening six minutes.

All was right in the 22nd however when Sean McDaid's fierce shot was brought down by Gary Madine inside the penalty box, before the striker thumped home the season opener.

Just before the stroke of half time Curran did his part by being brought down in the area by Kevin O'Connor, setting up Ian Harte to send Simon Moore the wrong way to give Carlisle the comfortable first half lead to clench all three points at home.

There were no cards issued in the match as Carlisle next face Huddersfield at home on Tuesday in Carling Cup action.

Plymouth Argyle 1 – 0 Southampton

Anton Peterlin got his first professional start after finding his way to the doorstep of Plymouth Argyle by way of Everton and the Premier League, and his first taste of victory.

Plymouth got off to a dream start in League One with a gritty defensive display at St. Mary's Stadium against Southampton.

With no real attacking impetus, Plymouth's goal came about just after the half time break.

Southampton enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half but were caught napping at the beginning of the second half and paid the ultimate price.

Rory Fallon was able to knock a long ball down and around the defense, with Luke Summerfield doing the rest by diverting his shot around Kelvin Davis for a valuable three points on the road.

Bondz N'Gala was the only player booked in the outing, and Plymouth will look to further their fortunes on Tuesday at home against Notts County.

Wycombe Wanderers 2 – 0 Morecambe

Jon-Paul Pittman came off the bench in the 77th minute to make a start to League Two's new season at home to Morecambe.

Scott Rendell had already given the home fans enough to be happy about with a 36th minute penalty after Matt Bloomfield was tripped in the box by Chris Shuker.

The Chairboys debutant striker made no mistake from 12 yards out as he cooly slotted around Barry Roche.

After making a start from the bench, Pittman firmly put his foot in the door for Tuesday's starting 11 against Millwall with a solo goal in the 84th minute.

Breaking down the right flank, the American striker cut hard left before uncorking on a 25 yard curler that left Roche helpless and gave Wycombe all three points at home. Only Lewis Montrose was booked in the outing.

Mike Grella was an 86th minute sub in Leeds United's 2-1 home loss to Derby on Opening Day. Compatriot Conor Doyle who just signed with the Rams made the bench but did not feature.

Zak Whitbread was not named to the season opener's roster as Norwich fell 2-3 at home to Watford.

Seb Harris was left on the bench in Northampton's 3-0 defeat at the hands of Torquay.
