JONES OUT, ALTIDORE IN FOR BRAZIL MATCH
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Thursday, August 5, 2010
The long awaited debut of Jermaine Jones has been put on hold as US Soccer has announced two roster changes for the August 10 match against Brazil.

"Jones and Chad Marshall are no longer on the roster," US Soccer director of communications Michael Kammarman confirmed to YA. "They have been replaced by Jozy Altidore and Omar Gonzalez."

Last year Jones switched his national team affiliation to the USA from Germany after FIFA changed several rules pertaining to international eligibility.

Jones however was unable to recover from a shin fracture and missed the entire season for Schalke and the World Cup.

The 28-year old must now hope to regain his health and put himself in contention for the US team later this year or early in 2011 as it prepares for the 2011 Gold Cup.

"I would like to thank Bob Bradley and the US Federation greatly for my first official invitation," Jones said in an official statement released by US Soccer. "It is an honor that I have been working towards for over a year."

"While I initially felt like I was ready to make my first appearance, it is also extremely important to me that I am 100 percent fit for my first national team game and that I make a good impression on the manager and my teammates."

"I hope to receive another invitation and finally fulfill my goal of playing with the U.S. national team in the very near future."

For Marshall, US Soccer did not offer any comment as to the specifics. Marshall was part of the 30-man preliminary World Cup team but failed to make the final 23-player roster.

Added to the roster will be LA Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez who will be looking to earn his first cap. The highly touted 21-year old central defender is expected to play a part for the US team in the 2014 cycle.

Altidore's addition to the roster will serve as a homecoming for the Villarreal forward. The 20-year old was born in nearby Livingston, New Jersey and began his professional career with the New York Red Bulls of MLS. While currently with Villarreal, Altidore has been the subject of numerous transfer rumors.

Tuesday's game will be the first game for each team following the World Cup.

It would be interesting to find out if Jones was ever considered for the German Team, and also how many goal did he score for Schalke during his stay with the Team.

The Game between Milan and Dalles was very boring, this was not the Milan I have been watching over the years. This was a Milan Team filled with substitues and it was awful. I just hope that in the years to comes team's from the US visit Europe and we see the real professional and how they play.

OK, here is what I said. Gonzalez has way more upside than the defender who was taken off, Chad Marshall. Our forward pool lacks depth, so not having Jozy in there hurt. But I can see where you were confused.

However, it does make it pretty clear that Gonzalez is replacing Marshall.

"I probably would have chosen these moves myself, as Gonzalez has way more upside and our forward pool is weak" - I may be just be tilting at windmills expecting reading comprehension, but really? Gonzalez is a DEFENDER! He will not be replacing Altidore on the front line unless we get a freakishly huge number of injuries. Having said that I am looking forward to seeing if he can replicate his Galaxy form for the US and the fact that he does have a couple goals (headers off corners if I remember correctly) might just qualify him for striker on the US team (yes that is sarcastic).
I hope that Jones can play for us soon as he would be good protection for our soon to be reconfigured back line.

Bring in Davies? are you high? The poor kid can barely run at full pace, and you want to bring him back against Brazil?
Ok I love that so many people are supporting the team, but lets be honest before we start spouting off on roster moves with guys 9 months removed from almost dying.

Instead of Altidore, Bradley should have brought in Charlie Daveis. He must be recovered by now. Jozy had his chance at the World Cup and Davies should be given a chance to play against Brazil. Besides, I think Davies and Buddle up top would be an interesting pairing. Come on Bradley, show some imagination.

Dissappointed that Jones won't be making the field, but can understand the need to stay with his club and get back to a starting role. Will hopefully see him in the next friendly.

Happy that Omar was called in. IMO having a 15 min cameo will do wonders for his development and show him what International play will be like. Then when he goes back to the Galaxy he'll know what he has to improve on to make the adjustment to international play. Great learning experience which will help his development.

Allegedly Jones was wearing some kind of sports tape on his leg during the Schalke match that he scored in recently. It doesn't appear that he's 100% and he does have his club to think of as well.

I'd rather have Omar Gonzalez playing forward than Josey Altidore. Sorry not to see Jones play...been waiting a long time. Almost as long as it's been since Altidore has scored a goal...that's why Bradley is going to lose his job.

You gotta love the classy response from jones. Smart pr-wise since we all want to hear he is firmly committed and excited.

I probably would have chosen these moves myself, as Gonzalez has way more upside and our forward pool is weak, but still... why now?
