BORNSTEIN TO JOIN TIGRES
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, July 20, 2010
US national team defender Jonathan Bornstein has announced this week that he will leave Chivas USA after this season and join Mexican club Tigres UANL starting in January of 2011.

"Bornstein has already signed the pre-contact with Tigres," Chivas USA press officer Eduard Cauich told YA. "He's going to wait until the season ends and then join Tigres."

Bornstein has played his entire professional career with Chivas USA after finishing his college career at UCLA in 2005. He was drafted by Chivas USA in the fourth round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. He won the Rookie of the Year award that season and has been an MLS All-Star ever since.

Bornstein has also been a regular at left back for the US national team this past cycle under coach Bob Bradley. He has been capped 34 times including two appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Bornstein, 25, has scored twice for the US with his most memorable goal coming on October 14, 2009 when he headed home a last minute equalizer in the 2-2 draw against Costa Rica in the team's World Cup qualifier. It was an emotional goal that came the day after finding out star forward Charlie Davies was nearly killed in a horrific car accident.

"First and foremost, I remain focused on finishing this season with Chivas USA," Bornstein said in a press release. "There is a lot we can accomplish, from SuperLiga this week to the Open Cup semifinals in September, getting into the playoffs and making a run at MLS Cup. When the season ends, I'm excited to join Tigres and ready for all the changes that will come with the move. It will be a big moment for me and I'm looking forward to it."

When Bornstein joins Tigres next year, he will play in the Mexican league that also features his World Cup teammates Jose Francisco Torres and Herculez Gomes who both play for Pachuca.
