Daniel Antunez made his Veikkausliiga debut for title aspirants FC Inter who drew with IFK Mariehamn on Monday evening at Veritas Stadion in Turku.
Antunez started at central midfielder and went the full 90 minutes. The Santa Ana, California native was active all match long winning multiple corner kicks for the hosts.
Inter was first on the scoreboard with a goal coming just two minutes before the halftime whistle.
Defender Henri Lehtonen managed to slip through the Mariehamn defense and Mika Mäkitalo, who played six seasons in Turku before a one year hiatus at Haka, found Lehtonen in the area who finished it off to give the home fans something to cheer about.
But the goal would not deter the Swedish-speaking visitors from the Åland Islands who countered with an equalizer just a minute later from young Petteri Forsell.
The 19 year old, who played alongside Lawrence Smith last season at VPS, scored on a free kick from 18 meters out after forward Mikko Paatelainen had been brought down by Inter's Ari Nyman just outside the area.
Antunez and the rest of the Inter attack tried finding a game-winner but could never capitalize leaving the two clubs with a splitting of the points in their season opener.
Inter return to action next Sunday when they face Jaro.
