Just days after defeating Ligue One leaders Bordeaux, Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes crashed out of the Coupe de France in humiliating fashion with a defeat at fouth division Quevilly.
Bocanegra got the starting nod again by head coach Frederic Antonetti and went the full 90 minutes in the forgettable loss.
The effort displayed by Rennes had to have been puzzling to their fans as Les Rouges Et Noirs came into the match riding a hot streak having scored 12 goals in their last three matches.
But the hosts from Group D of the Championnat de France Amateur had the backing of a jam-packed Stade Lozai and sent the crowd into a frenzy in the 44th minute when Gregory Beaugrard scored the game's lone goal.
Beaugrard gathered in a ball and split defenders Petter Hansson and Kader Mangane before sending a shot past Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez.
The Brittany club desperately pushed for an equalizer but not even red hot Asamoah Gyan or stalwart Sylvain Marveaux could push a ball across for the visitors.
As the final whistle blew, the modest club from France's Haute-Normandie region found themselves in unchartered waters reaching the Coupe de France quarterfinals.
Bocanegra and company will try to pick up the pieces when they return to league action on Sunday at Auxerre.
