Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes provided a stout defensive effort at home in a victory against Lorient on Saturday at Route de Lorient in Rennes.

It was initially believed that Bocanegra would be sitting out the match due to an accumulation of yellow cards but it was announced that the California native will serve his suspension next week against Nancy.

The US national team captain was slotted into head coach Frédéric Antonetti's starting 11 at left back and wound up going the full 90 minutes.

Their regional neighbors from Lorient came into the match on a high with just one defeat in their last 10 matches, however the home defense, combined with 26 shots by the Rennes attack, was able to rise to the occasion and claim the three points.

It took just two minutes for the hosts to score the game's only goal. Midfielder Sylvain Marveaux's corner kick was played into the area and forward Moussa Sow was able to take advantage score past Lorient goalkeeper Lionel Cappone.

The goal gave Les Rouges Et Noirs all the confidence in the world and their attack kept pressing to double the margin however the Lorient defense would hold the hosts at bay.

Outside of a moment early in the first half where Bocanegra was outflanked by a Lorient forward, the American was a solid presence on the left side of Antonetti's defense.

Bocanegra nearly got on the scoring sheet in the 75th minute when his header off another Marveaux corner nearly found the back of the net but struck the woodwork instead.

The win lifts Rennes up to eigth in the Ligue 1 standings with 23 points as they next face nancy next weekend without Bocanegra.
