With the Eredivisie back in swing and a failed UEFA Cup group stage effort in the rear view mirror, Heerenveen midfielder Michael Bradley says the team's main motive is still to ensure a return to European competition next season with a top five finish.

Such a standing at the end of the campaign would enter the club into the league's Champions League playoff, with the assurance of no less than another UEFA Cup berth.

"We'll be pushing hard for a top five spot for a UEFA Cup spot, and maybe
even the Champions League," Bradley told YA in the aftermath of a 3-1 loss at PSV Eindhoven this weekend. "This was a tough way to start the second half of the season, though."

Despite the defeat, Heerenveen remain sixth and six points behind fifth place Feyenoord, who also lost this weekend.

While Bradley is trying to help his club qualify for Europe again, his US Under-20 teammates this week handled the task of booking their place in this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup without him.

US coach Thomas Rongen attempted to gain his release for the CONCACAF qualifying tournament, but Frisians counterpart Gertjan Verbeek was not willing to part with the #18 shirt.

"That was out of my control," shrugged Bradley. "US Soccer lobbied hard for me, maybe to go over and play the first game, but it just didn't work out."

"These things happen, but I'm still happy to be here (playing for Heerenveen)."

Bradley and the rest of the Blue White Vikings get back to action with a Saturday visit from Heracles Almelo, who they have yet to beat in three tries.
