MICHAEL ADUBATO - Tuesday, February 2, 2021
In Dutch action over the weekend, Luca de la Torre was the only American to take to the field, while Desevio Payne hopes to rejoin Emmen from his injury woes soon.

Heracles 1-0 Groningen

Luca de la Torre started and went the distance for Heracles as they came away 1-0 victors after a tough game against the Green-Whites of Groningen. The solitary goal came from Delano Burgzorg in the first half of the contest.

Just four minutes into the game the hosts should have taken the lead when a Silvester van der Water from deep, was played into the crowded box. Lucas Shoofs was the first one to it and got off his shot from about 10 yards out and although it beat the keeper, it didn't beat the crossbar.

It was then Groningen's chance to go ahead but although Jørgen Larsen got the ball just six yards out and was able to turn and shoot, it was a pathetic attempt that was cleared from the line. The miss hurt even more because a minute later Heracles were ahead. From a long ball up the left flank from Robin Pröpper; the Groningen defender failed to deal with it but Burgzorg didn't. the Dutchman got around the floundering defender and pulled the trigger just inside the box, beating the keeper at the far post in the 24th minute.

Against the run of play, van der Water could have doubled the lead when he broke downfield but his shot from about 20 yards out sailed well wide of the target.

Early in the second half, de la Torre set up Giacomo Quagliata inside the box but the Italian took a spill before getting his shot off.

The visitors dominated possession as well as shots at the goal but just couldn't make one count, so left the stadium with no points in the bag. The three that the Almelo team picked up leaves them in 10th place on 25 points. Friday night they'll hit the road to take on Fortuna Sittard.

Ulysses Llanez was not named for the team sheet when Heerenveen travelled to Twente and came away with a 0-0 draw. The point allows the Friesians to jump up to ninth place, just a point ahead of Heracles.

Desevio Payne didn't take any part in FC Emmen's 2-0 road loss to Willem II as he is sidelined due to injury. Having only collected one point in their last five outings, it will be a miracle if they are not relegated at the end of the season as they sit in last place, nine points from safety. Regardless, they'll go again over the weekend when they host AZ Alkmaar.

Alex Mendez was an unused sub when his Ajax II travelled to Eindhoven and came away 2-1 victors against PSV II. Next up is a home game against Cambuur.
