Christian Pulisic would come off the bench to help in the build up to the only goal of the game as Chelsea came away with win over DeAndre Yedlin and Newcastle United.

Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United

Marcos Alonso's scored the only goal of the game as Chelsea went on to beat Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge to move themselves up into the Premier League's top four.

Christian Pulisic would come off the bench to play 26 minutes and found himself in the build up to the goal that sealed the win for the Blues. On the other side, DeAndre Yedlin started for the Magpies and played the full 90 minutes.

While Liverpool has been getting a majority of the press for their unbeaten season thus far, Chelsea has also turned some heads as the team has played well with a young team while they are under a transfer ban. However, they would find themselves in a huge challenge to breakthrough a Newcastle team that decided to play a more defensive game to frustrate their opponents.

The host did have a few good opportunities to break down Newcastle's defensive barrier in the first half. Callum Hudson-Odoi dribbled the ball towards Yedlin on the left side before playing it to Mason Mount in the center. The midfielder quickly turned for a shot at goal, but his effort was parried away by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Chelsea kept up their pressure in the second half and thought they had a goal in the 56th minute when Tammy Abraham headed Willian's corner kick on target. However, the ball came crashing off the bar to his disappointment. Abraham had another chance 10 minutes later, but his header from Odoi's corner kick from the left side went wide.

Pulisic then had a chance in the 67th minute to score his first league goal as Chelsea launched a counter-attack. Hudson-Odoi cut into the area to fire a shot at goal, but his attempt was deflected into the path of the American. He steered the ball goal bound, but Dubravka's reaction save kept the game scoreless.

It was getting very frustrating for Chelsea as they were looking a goal, but they would eventually find it in the 73rd minute when Pulisic ran into the area with the ball, crossed to Hudson-Odoi, and the English winger set up Alonso to put the ball in the back of the net.

Now that the host had broken down Newcastle's defense, they were looking for more goals. They came close to doubling the lead six minutes later when Mateo Kovacic played the ball to Pulisic. He had a good chance at goal, but decided to pass the ball to Abraham, who was possibly in a better position, he lofted the ball over the bar.

It was a good win for a Chelsea and a positive performance for Pulisic, who came in for praise from his coach Frank Lampard after the game.

The win moves Chelsea up to fourth place in the standings with 17 points, while Newcastle has slipped into the relegation zone in 18th place with eight points.

Reading 1-0 Preston North End

Matt Miazga's goal eight minutes into stoppage time helped Reading to secure all three points in their win over Preston North End at the Madejski Stadium in a game that was surely head for a tie.

The Royals entered the game at the bottom half of the standings and stuggling to earn points. This forced the front office to make a coaching change during the international break as they hired Mark Bowen to replace Jose Gomes.

It wasn't the best of games for either team, as there were are few chances in between. Things turned scary in the second half when Reading Michael Morrison went down with a head injury, and that would lead to an additional seven minutes to be played in the game.

Reading, who had not won a game in six outings, continued to put pressure on the Preston goal until they final found a breakthrough near the end.

The visitors failed to clear a Reading corner kick well enough as Jordan Obita took possession of the ball. The English midfielder then fired in a long range shot that Preston goalkeeper Declan Rudd was able to save. However, he was not able to hold the ball as the rebound fell into the path of Miazga who volleyed it into the back of the net.

It was a much-needed win for Reading as they hope to build on this a continue to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

Reading moves up to 20th place in the standings with 11 points.
