KENYA BROWN - Tuesday, September 18, 2018
Ventura Alvarado and Necaxa came away with a big win over leaders Cruz Azul while Jose Torres provided the assist in Puebla's narrow win over Queretaro.
Necaxa 2-0 Cruz Azul
It was a very successful weekend for Necaxa as goals in both halves helped them to knock off Apetura leaders Cruz Azul at
Estadio Victoria de Aguascalientes.
The win gives Los Rayos a big boost to their chances of contending for a spot in the playoffs as they only sit three points out from the eighth spot.
The host hit Cruz Azul with the first goal in the 18th minute, with Matias Fernandez's free-kick going under the wall and beating goalkeeper Jose Corona.
Cruz Azul came close to leveling the score seven minutes later when Edgar Méndez's cross found teammate Milton Caraglio in the area, but the ball trickled just past the outside of the post.
The visitors pushed for a goal, but Necaxa put the game to bed deep into the second half when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Victor Davila was brought down just inside the area.
Then Chilean international would then dust himself off to convert the penalty and ensure that Necaxa took all three points in the end.
Necaxa now sits in 14th place in the standings.
Queretaro 0-1 Puebla
Vladimir Lorona's second-half goal was all Puebla need to take all three points on the road as they beat Queretaro at Estadio La Corregidora.
The first half would end scoreless, but not before Queretaro's George Corral would have the best chance when his free-kick was head towards the goal, but it did not bend enough as it hit the side netting.
The second half would Puebla break the scoreless deadlock just minutes in when Torres' corner kick was met by Lorona as headed the ball past goalkeeper Nicolas Vikonis for the only goal of the game.
Queretaro pushed to level the score, but all of their efforts were in vain as Puebla came away with the win.
Puebla now sits in 10th place in the standings with 13 points.
