Jorge Villafana and Santos Laguna sit atop the Liga MX standings with their win over Ventura Alvarado and Necaxa while William Yarbrough and Leon got back in the win column over Pumas.

Necaxa 1-2 Santos Laguna

A strike from Djaniny and an own goal from Igor Lichnovsky helped Santos Laguna to the win over Necaxa at
Estadio Victoria de Aguascalientes, putting them atop the standings as teams continue to push for qualify for the playoffs.

Villafana started for Los Verdiblancos at left back while Alvarado watched all of the action from the bench for Necaxa.

The host started the game strong and had a few good opportunities to open the scoring. Matias Fernandez had a crack with a free kick, but goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco had no problems parrying the powerful shot over the bar.

However, Necaxa would find the opening the goal in the 16th minute when Ruben Gonzalez released teammate Victor Davila with a through ball and the Chilean international rounded Fernandez to tap the ball in from close range.

Santos immediately scored the equalizer in the 18th minute when Djaniny dribbled the ball from midfield before unleashing his shot from the edge of the area and beating Marcelo Barovero.

It was a wide-open game from then on as both teams had chances to add more goals, but it would be the visitors who took the lead for good in the 37th minute when Lichnovsky, who was marking Julio Furch, got his foot on the ball after a cross from Djaniny but directed it into his own goal.

Now sitting atop the standings, Santos Laguna will be looking to stay there as seven games remain until the playoffs.

Leon 3-0 Pumas UNAM

Leon put on a strong performance as they returned to winning ways as they shutout previous Liga MX leaders Pumas UNAM at Estadio Leon.

Yarbrough took up his role between the sticks while Landon Donovan made another appearance from off the bench. Bernabe Magana watched from the bench for Pumas.

With the race to earn a Clausura playoff spot, both teams were looking were looking for a win to keep them in the race as they currently sit outside the top eight.

The host came close to opening the scoring just seven minutes into the contest but Nicolas Castillo's shot just trickled wide of the goal. The near miss did not deter them as they scored a minute later when Luis Montes took a lobbed pass from teammate Jose Rodriguez and fired the ball past goalkeeper Alfredo Saldivar.

Elias Hernandez doubled Leon's lead in the 27th minute when a deflected pass found him in the area and his half-volleyed shot found the back of the net.

Leon continued their momentum into the second half and added a third goal in the 58th minute. Montes ran into the area with the ball before crossing it over to Mauro Boselli, who tapped it in the goal to the delight of their supporters.

Los Esmeraldas sit in 11th place in the standings with 14 points, just a single point out of the playoff places.


Rubio Rubin and Alejandro Guido came off the bench for Tijuana as they came away with a 3-1 win over Lobos BUAP.

Joe Corona came off the bench for America as they shared the points with Guadalajara following a 1-1 tie.

Lalo Fernandez watched from the bench for Tigres in their 2-0 win over Veracruz.

In Ascenso MX, Rodrigo Lopez started while Diego De la Tejera came off the bench in Celaya's 1-1 tie with Potros UAEM.
