Aron Johannsson saw his first action for Werder Bremen while Timmy Chandler assisted on a goal for Eintracht Frankfurt in their tie with Freiburg as the Bundesliga returned from its winter break.

Werder Bremen 1-1 Hoffenheim

Goals on either side of the half saw Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg share the spoils as both teams played their first game in 2018 at the Weserstadion.

Johannsson, who had not played in a competitive game for Bremen for a long period, entered the game in the 84th minute.

Both teams entered the game with different objectives - Hoffenheim sat in the middle of the standings with a good chance of getting back into the Champions League hunt while Bremen looked to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

It was rather quiet in the first half until Benjamin Hubner scored in the 39th minute. Serge Gnabry's cross into the area found the head the defender as he guided the ball past goalkeeper Jii Pavlenka.

However, the host fought for the equalizer in the second half and were rewarded in the 63rd minute when Zlatko Junuzovic's corner kick was headed on by Jerome Gondorf, and Theodor Gebre Selassie got his foot on the ball to put in the back of the net.

Hoffenheim had a great chance to steal all three points but Andrej Kramaric's one-timed shot from close range was welll saved by Pavlenka.

Bremen remain in 16th place in the standings with 16 points.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Freiburg

Robin Koch's second-half goal allowed Freiburg to come away with a point in their game against Eintracht Frankfurt at the
Commerzbank-Arena.

Chandler started for the Eagles while Caleb Stanko watched all of the action from the bench for Freiburg.

Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow was forced into a double save in the first half as he stopped a shot from Sebastien Haller followed by Branimir Hrgota.

Bartosz Kapustka came close to scoring for the visitors at the other end when his shot took a deflection off Chandler's foot. However, Marius Wolf would get back in time to clear the ball off the goal line.

Frankfurt would finally opening the scoring in the 28th minute when Freiburg failed to clear well after a corner kick. Omar Mascarell would then send the ball back into the area allowing Chandler to head the ball into the path of Haller, who got his foot onto it and guide into the goal.

The host pushed for a second goal, but Freiburg were able to score the equalizer in the 51st minute. Koch rose up to head in the ball following a Christian Gunter corner kick.

Frankfurt sit in ninth place in the standings with 27 points while Freiburg in in 14th with 20 points.

Notes

Bobby Wood started but goal-less run continued as Hamburg fell to a 1-0 loss at the hand of Augsburg.

Weston McKennie watched from the bench for Schalke as they started the second of the season with a 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig.

Both Christian Pulisic and John Brooks did not play for their respective teams as Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg shared the points following a 0-0 tie.
