KENYA BROWN - Wednesday, November 8, 2017
US Soccer has announced its 21-man roster for their friendly game against Portugal in Lieria on November 14, with five young uncapped players being named in the team.

Josh Sargent, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jesse Gonzalez will get a chance to take the field against the European champions under interim US head coach Dave Sarachan.

Sargent, 17, makes his first call-up to the senior team after representing both the Under-20 and Under-17 national teams at their respective World Cups this year. He will be making the move to German Bundesliga team Werder Bremen in February 2018.

McKennie, 19, has earned his way into the starting line-up for Schalke this season and has played well during his time on the field, thus, getting his shot to make an impression for the national team.

In addition to the youth in the team, there are some experienced players with a few making their returns after long layoffs. Center back John Brooks returns after recovering from injury and starting for Wolfsburg for the first time since making the move to the team from Hertha Berlin over the summer. Midfielder Danny Williams earned a recall to the team after playing well for Huddersfield Town, which earned promotion to the English Premier League last season.

Some notable omissions for the team are Christian Pulisic, who has been given a break after playing for both the national team and Borussia Dortmund for most of the year. Bobby Wood has also been left out as according to Sarachan he is dealing with a knee injury. The forward has also been in poor form recently as he has failed to score any goals for Hamburg since bagging his first earlier in the Bundesliga season.

Probably the surprising omission from the team is midfielder Jonathan Gonzalez. The 18-year-old, who has received interest from the Mexican national team, has been a revelation in Liga MX this season as he earned his way into the starting line-up for Monterrey. As the team will be heading into the playoffs, the US opted to let him remain with his club team.

The game is set to be played at Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa in Lieria.
