German Bundesliga team Schalke is buying in on the future of Weston McKennie as they have signed the young American midfielder to a five-year contract.
The 19-year-old, who was promoted to the senior team over the summer, has so far made an impression in his short time with the Gelsenkirchen-based team. He made his first start in their 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich two weeks ago.
Schalke sees a bright future with the midfielder in their team and that is why they felt it was right to sign him to a long-term deal.
"Weston will develop into a key part of our first team with us. Weston has shown in the past few months that he is more than capable of contributing significantly to the future of Schalke. Thanks to his talent and his willingness to learn, Weston has made the rise from the U19s to the Bundesliga and it's been a success from the get go. We're very happy that Weston sees his long-term future to be at FC Schalke 04," said Schalke's sporting director, Christian Heidel, in a statement on the team's website.
As for McKennie, he seems pleased with the new contract and looks forward to helping Schalke improve and eventually compete for the Bundesliga crown.
It was an easy decision for me to make. I love the club and everything here: my teammates, the head coach, and the fans", I'd love to stay here forever," he said.
McKennie will look to get back on the field in the team's next game as they take on Bayer Leverkusen this weekend.
