FRIEDEL NAMES 22 FOR COTIF

EXTRA TIME
DAVID SMITH - Tuesday, July 19, 2016
Brad Friedel has named the 22-man squad which he will take to the eastern coast of Spain to compete in next week's COTIF Tournament near Valencia.

While officially the United States U-19 head coach, Friedel is taking the reigns for this tournament, which is officially for U-20 eligible players.

The tournament is comprised of two five-team groups, giving each participant four group games in a round-robin format, before a semifinal for the top two from each group followed by a final game for the championship.

Friedel's squad has significant changes from the U-20 team which Tab Ramos coached to victory in the recent NTC Invitational in California. Defenders Hugo Arellano, Marlon Fossey and Auston Trusty, as well as midfielder Weston McKennie are the only holdovers amongst the 22 named players.

The team includes only four members who are currently playing outside of the US. In addition to the Fulham academy member Fossey, Manchester United youth player Matthew Olosunde and German-based midfielder Kevin Lankford, who plays with 2nd Bundesliga club FC Heidenheim's youth team, are the two other European-based players.

Tijuana striker Brandon Vazquez, who has recently featured for their first team in pre-season warm-ups, rounds out the list of four.

Additionally, MLS academies are heavily represented with a total of eight participants. Three of these - Hector Montalvo, Weston McKennie and Devin Vega - are tied to the traditionally productive FC Dallas academy.

Friedel's squad will face the other Group A teams Venezuela, Mauritania, Spain and Bahrain between July 26 and August 1, before a potential semifinal on August 2 and the final on August 4.

The other group consists of Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Morocco and Qatar, with the first two the likely favorites to advance to the semifinal.
