KENYA BROWN - Tuesday, September 29, 2015
Cole Grossman and Stabaek scored a narrow victory over Ethan Horvath and Molde, while A.J. Soares and Viking could do nothing to stop Rosenborg.
Stabaek 1 - 0 Molde
The Blues Ones maintained an outside chance of catching league leaders Rosenborg as they scored a big win over last year's league champions at the Nadderud Stadium.
Grossman took up his normal spot in the midfield and played the entire 90 minutes, while Horvath had a strong outing between the sticks for Molde in the loss.
The home side scored the lone goal of the game in the 14th minute and it was a sensational one at that. Mohammed Keita would volley his shot from distance and it would dip just under the bar and beyond the outstretched hands of Horvath who was caught off guard.
Stabaek continued to press in the first half to extend their lead, but each chance would go wide of the goal.
The host would press on at the start of the second half, but again poor finishing in the final third would hurt them.
Molde had an excellent opportunity to level the score, but a shot from Agnaldo Moraes just clipped the bar.
The chances kept coming for both during the duration of the second half, but neither could convert on their chances.
The win keeps Stabaek in second place on 50 points, eight back of Rosenborg.
Rosenborg 2 - 0 Viking
It was a rough night for Viking as their pursuit of second place in the standings took a hit on the road at the Lerkendal Stadium.
Soares got the start in the center of the defense for Viking in the loss.
The Troll Kids had the best opportunity early on in the first half when Ole Kristian Salnaes volleyed a shot towards the Viking goal, but his effort hit the post.
There were several other chances for both sides in the first half, but it would be the host that would break the deadlock before halftime.
Pal Helland would send his free kick into the box and teammate Anders Konradsen would collect the ball. He then passed it off to Yann Erik de Lanlay whose shot deflected off a Viking defender and found its way in the back of the net.
Rosenborg would dominate the second half and they would extend their lead in the 67th minute.
Helland would take the ball in the box before passing it off to Alexander Soderlund to finish.
Viking's loss sees them drop to fifth place in the standings on 44 points.
Rhett Bernstein got the start and played 75 minutes, while Erik Hurtado entered the game for Mjondalen in the second half in their 3-0 loss to Lillestrom.
Zarek Valentin started in the right back position for Bodo/Glimt and received a yellow card in the team's 3-1 defeat to Stromsgodset.
Alex DeJohn watched from the bench as Start settled for a 1-1 tie with Valerenga.
