Four years after signing for Hoffenheim, Joseph-Claude Gyau has left the team to link up with Borussia Dortmund's reserve squad in Germany's 3. Liga.
"Borussia Dortmund has signed the US-American Joseph Gyau for the U23 team," the team announced on its website.
Gyau found playing time with Hoffenheim's first team hard to come by, racking up a total of 50 minutes in a pair of appearances last season. He was far more prolific with their reserve squad competing in the country's fourth-division Regionalliga, where he earned 26 starts and netted seven goals in 2013-14.
He did spend the 2012-13 season on loan with FC St. Pauli of the 2. Bundesliga, but also struggled to establish himself as a regular, with just five starts throughout the course of the season.
His new squad, Borussia Dortmund's reserves, has competed in the 3. Liga for the previous two seasons, both times finishing a few points above relegation.
They have been headed by former US international David Wagner since 2011, and will likely feature fellow US youth international Junior Flores in the upcoming season.
The German 3. Liga has an early start, with Dortmund II first visiting eastern team Rot-Weiß Erfurt on July 26.
