United States national team forward Aron Johannsson has signed a new four year contract with AZ Alkmaar that will keep him with the club through 2018.

Johannsson, 23, is coming off his first full season with AZ Alkmaar where he scored 26 goals in all competitions. For the upcoming campaign, the club has hired former Dutch national team great Marco Van Basten as head coach.

The Alabama-born but Icelandic raised Johannsson made headlines last August when he announced he would switch his international affiliation from Iceland to the United States. He played in most of the remaining World Cup qualifiers and friendlies since.

Earlier this month, Jurgen Klinsmann named Johannsson to the World Cup team and in the first tune-up friendly, scored a goal in a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan.
