Jozy Altidore's Sunderland managed their first win of the Premier League season as they beat Newcastle United, while Tim Howard notched a penalty save en route to Everton's victory over Brad Guzan's Aston Villa.

Sunderland 2-1 Newcastle United

Jozy Altidore and Sunderland notched their first win of the season as they beat their cross-city rival Newcastle United.

The American forward started, went the distance, and assisted in the Black Cats' winning goal.

Steven Fletcher put the home side up early as he headed home in the 5th minute, however Mathieu Debuchy equalized in the 57th minute for Newcastle.

In the 84th minute though Sunderland got the game winner as Altidore gave off the ball to Fabio Borini who smashed the ball into the back of the net.

The Black Cats are now in 19th place and five points below the relegation zone.

They hope to win their second in a row when they take on Hull City on the road.

Aston Villa 0-2 Everton

Tim Howard's Everton beat Brad Guzan's Aston Villa in a battle of American ‘keepers.

Howard went the distance and recorded a penalty save, while Guzan also went the full ninety and notched two saves.

Villa's first and best chance came on a penalty kick in the 8th minute, but Christian Benteke's shot was brilliantly saved by Howard.

The Toffees though made a roaring come back in the second half as Leon Osman found Romelu Lukaku to equalize. The England international then scored his own goal in the 81st to give Everton the winner.

Villa is now in 13th place and have to take on West Ham United, while Everton is in 6th place and host Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United 3-2 Stoke City

Geoff Cameron and Stoke City went down to Manchester United in dramatic fashion at Old Trafford.

The American defender returned to Stoke's lineup after sitting out some weeks due to injury. The ex-Houston Dynamo star went the full ninety minutes, while Brek Shea and Maurice Edu did not make the game day roster.

The Potters started the game strong as Peter Crouch put them on the board in the 4th minute, but Robin Van Persie's strike in the 43rd minute leveled the game for the home side.

It only took two minutes however for the Potters to take the lead once again as Marko Arnautovic's free kick beat David De Gea.

Tensions began to grow as the game went on and United were heading to another disappointing match, but headers from Wayne Rooney in the 78th minute and Javier Hernandez in the 80th gave David Moyes' side the three points.

The Potters have gone four games winless and are now just above the relegation zone by goal differential. They take on Birmingham City in midweek League Cup action next.

Huddersfield Town 3-2 Leeds United

Duane Holmes played a half in Huddersfield Town's win over Leeds United.

The teenager made his first start for Town and was subbed out for Sean Scannell at the half.

Leeds took the lead right away as Matt Smith scored in the 2nd minute, but Daniel Ward equalized just 8 minutes later for Town.

In the 62nd minute Huddersfield took the lead off of a Tom Lees own goal, however Dexter Blackstone equalized in the 73rd minute.

Jonathan Stead though notched the winner for Town in the 77th minute with a low shot that beat ‘keeper Patrick Kenny to his left.

Huddersfield is in 9th place and take on Wigan Athletic next week.

Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Ipswich Town

Tim Ream and Bolton drew with Ipswich Town at the Reebok Stadium.

Ream started and went the distance at center back, while Stuart Holden did not feature because of a long term injury.

Mohamed Medo put Bolton into the lead with a free kick strike, however David McGoldrick's left-footed shot leveled the game for Ipswich.

The Wanderers are in 21st place, just above the relegation zone, and take on AFC Bournemouth next weekend.

Yeovil Town 3-1 Nottingham Forest

Eric Lichaj returned to the field in Nottingham Forest's loss to Yeovil Town.

Lichaj did not play last week because of a suspension, however he was back in the lineup on Saturday and went the distance.

Yeovil Town got the lead early as Edward Upson managed two goals in just 40 minutes, however Nathanial Chalobah was able to cut the lead in half after just two minutes for Forest.

Byron Webster though notched just seconds later after the restart give them another two goal lead.

Forest were unable to come back and are now in 6th place in the Championship.

They take on Blackpool next weekend.

Notes

Brad Friedel dressed but did not feature in Tottenham's win over Hull City.

Seb Hines did not feature in Middlesbrough's victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Jonathan Spector and Will Packwood did not make the game day roster in Birmingham City's draw against Derby County.

Oguchi Onyweu dressed but did not feature in Queen Park Rangers' loss to Burnley.

Zak Whitbread did not play in Leicester City's win over AFC Bournemouth.

Jon Paul Pittman dressed but did not feature in Wycombe's loss to Bury.

Zak Whitbread was loaned to Derby County for 3 months on Sep. 30, but is out again with a calf strain.
