Aron Johannsson scored a jaw dropping game winner against Eredivisie leaders PSV on Saturday while Charles Kazlauskas and Helmond were steamrolled at home by Almere City.
AZ 2 - 1 PSV
Aron Johannsson went the distance for AZ, scoring the game winner in the process, as AZ defended their home turf and claimed a win over league leaders PSV.
Defender Nick Viergever edged out marker Joshua Brenet to a Maarten Martens corner and smashed a header past PSV goalie Jeroen Zoet off of an 11th minute to provide the hosts with the initial lead.
Memphis Depay had threatened the AZ net in the early goings, and eventually found the net, whirling a 20 yard free kick into the bottom right corner, tying the game for PSV in the 35th minute.
Johannsson grabbed the headlines in the 57th minute with a brilliant eventual game winner. The American striker chested the ball down, let it take one bounce before sending a loping, 25 yard shot over the head of a helpless Zoet. The goal, Johannsson's fifth in the Eredivisie this season, secured the win for AZ and subsequently, handed PSV their first loss in the Eredivisie. After a mid-week hat trick, Johannsson grabbed four goals within the span of four days.
Both teams have midweek Europa League games with AZ hosting Greek outfit PAOK and PSV heading to Ukraine to take on Chornomorets.
Helmond Sport 1 - 3 Almere City
Charles Kazlauskas played the whole game for Helmond, whose bad week continued as they lost to cellar dwellers Almere City.
Almere City opened up with the scoring in the 34th minute through Tim Receveur. Although Wouter van der Steen was able to turn away an initial Almere City effort, the rebound fell right to Receveur, who was free to tap the ball home to make it 1-0.
Kazlauskas was forced to make a mid-game adjustment, stepping up into midfield from his starting position of right back after Juanito Sequeira went down with an injury.
Things got worse or Helmond in the 55th minute as Vincent Janssen extended the lead for Almere City with a 20 yard strike. The goal was the third of the year for the Almere City striker. Enzio Boldjewin outworked defender Ferry de Regt in the 71st minute to score his first goal for Almere City after moving from Den Bosch over the summer, making it 3-0.
Dave Nieskens scored a consolation goal for the hosts in the 89th minute, but Helmond would ultimately lose their second game in four days, after dropping out of the KNVB Cup at the hands of Ijsselmeervogels on Tuesday.
Helmond Sport are next in action against Jong Twente on next Monday while Almere City take on VVV Venlo on Friday.
