DAVID SMITH - Thursday, September 12, 2013
Conor O'Brien scored a goal in his Odense debut, hitting the sixth of the team's nine goals in their blowout Danish Cup win over lower-tier team Udfordringen on Wednesday.
In his first appearance since joining the team at the end of the summer transfer window, the American started and played the full 90 minutes in the right back position.
O'Brien was joined by four other new OB players - Niclas Vemmelund, Dusan Djuric, Jacob Barrett and Mustafa Abdellaoue - who were also all seeing their first action with the team since joining just days before.
There was little question as to whether Odense would come out victorious over their seventh-tier opponents, only how many the relative giants would put on the scoreboard over the course of the 90 minutes.
Swedish international Djuric, who had just joined from French team Valenciennes during the transfer window, opened the scoring in the tenth minute, then Mustafa Abdellaoue netted the first of his three goals seven minutes later before Darko Bodul added another in the 23rd minute.
The greatest moment of excitement for the overmatched hosts came just past the half-hour, when Martin Everland managed to put away a long-range shot to pull one back for the hosts.
The guests got back to business quickly, however, with Abdellaoue closing out the first-half scoring in the 39th minute, and completing his hat trick in two minutes after the restart to bring the score to 5-1.
O'Brien showed his prowess two minutes past the hour, netting the first for is new team. A 73rd-minute strike from Jeppe Hansen followed by another by David Löfquist in the 87th and a ninth and final Odense goal from Jeppe Hansen in second-half injury time completed the blow-out.
O'Brien will hope for his league debut on Sunday when the team travels to last-place Brøndby.
