He may not be the most popular player on the US Team's roster, but RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman has done what few others could: make the World Cup qualifying team after a stellar Gold Cup performance.
Beckerman was one of the more outstanding players throughout the Gold Cup with his passing, while playing his destroyer role to near perfection.
What does he attribute the call up to?
"I just keep trying to work hard and improve," Beckerman told YA. "I've been trying to stay consistent."
His consistency and hard work have caught the eye of USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who has selected Beckerman frequently over the past year.
"There are a lot of similarities between Klinsmann and (Real Salt Lake head coach) Jason Kreis," described Beckerman. "They are both great motivators. Both coaches are able to get the best out of each of the players. What they command makes players ooze confidence."
The USA will head to Costa Rica Friday to take on the Ticos in a rematch of the game played in the snowstorm earlier this year.
Beckerman will be lining up on the opposite side of fellow RSL teammate, Costa Rican forward Álvaro Saborío.
"It'll be interesting. He's definitely one of the guys that we will be focusing on defending," said Beckerman. "Hopefully he gets his goals out of him tonight, and saves the rest for Seattle."
