Terrence Boyd was the sacrificial substitute in the goalless Vienna derby.
Rapid Vienna defender Stephan Palla earned two bookings in the first 27 minutes of the game that left his team down a man for over an hour. His first was in the sixth minute for a slide tackle which stopped an Austria Vienna counter attack early. 20 minutes later, Palla was again late with his tackle and earned his marching orders.
Thomas Schrammel replaced Boyd in order to sure up the Rapid back line.
Despite the man advantage Austria Vienna were held scoreless throughout the match. Their chances for a goal came from set pieces with a Marko Stankovic shot in the 58th minute coming closest.
The best attempt of the game happened a minute later. Christopher Trimmel's header hit the left post of the Austria Vienna goal. Rapid have had an early red card in each their last two matches and the experience seemed to have helped.
The draw puts Rapid Vienna in second place with eight points while their neighbors sit in sixth place with five points.
Boyd will hope to play the full 90 minutes next week as his team take on last-place FC Admira Wacker MŲdling on Sunday.
