ANDY SCHREUR - Sunday, July 21, 2013
Greg Garza played 90 minutes and Paul Arriola made his pro debut and recorded an assist as Tijuana and Atlas drew on Friday night at the Estadio Caliente.

Club Tijuana 3 - 3 Atlas

The Xolos opened their season in dramatic fashion with Dario Benedetto scoring the first goal of his hat trick in only the seventh minute. The Argentine beat two defenders to the ball on the edge of the box and caught goalkeeper Alan López out of goal and lobbed it over him for his first goal since transferring from Arsenal (Argentina).

He added his second in the 18th minute to give Tijuana a 2-0 when he capitalized on a turnover and again caught López near the 18 yard line and calmly hit it in the open net. Vicente Vuoso converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute after sending Adrian Zermeño the wrong way to get one goal back for Atlas heading into halftime.

Benedetto added his third goal in his Liga MX debut in the 61st minute and was assisted by Arriola, who after just four minutes into his pro debut, found the Argentine striker on a run behind the Atlas defense to make it 3-1 Xolos.

Vuoso scored his second goal on a spectacular half volley in double coverage from 16 yards in the 69th minute to breathe some life back into Atlas. The Zorros pressed hard for a tying goal and found it through substitute Édson Rivera in the 84th minute to force a share of the points.

The Xolos opened their season without Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo, who are currently with the US National Team. New signing Herculez Gomez returned to the team but is reported to be out 4-8 weeks with a right knee injury. Tijuana will travel to the capital to take on América on Saturday, July 27.

Joaquin Hernández was an unused substitute in Monterrey's 1-0 loss to Cruz Azul.

Ernest Nungaray was not in the 18 as Morelia beat Querétaro 3-1 on Friday.

Ventura Alvarado was not in the 18 for Necaxa who defeated Altamira 3-1 in its opener

Adrian Ruelas was not in the 18 as Veracruz and Chiapas drew 2-2 on Saturday.

Benji Joya, Daniel Cuevas and Santos Laguna open their season on Tuesday when they host Zacatepec in Mexican Cup action.
