BRIAN SCIARETTA - Thursday, May 16, 2013
US national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann today announced his roster for the upcoming friendless and three World Cup qualifiers in June.

The roster will be missing some familiar faces as Carlos Bocanegra has been dropped despite returning to the starting lineup for Racing Santander. Steve Cherundolo is not on the team as US Soccer stated he is not fully recovered from a knee injury suffered in February. He did play last weekend for Hannover, however, to set a club record for 299 Bundesliga appearances.

The biggest omission, however, is to that of the team's all-time leading scorer Landon Donovan who is returning to solid form for the Los Angeles Galaxy but who missed three World Cup qualifiers after a self-imposed sabbatical from December through late March.

Included on the roster, however, are a series of players who have all had terrific seasons. Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo are currently involved in a Copa Libertadores campaign with Club Tijuana and have advanced to the quarter finals.

Clint Dempsey and Tottenham are still alive for a Champions League spot and Brad Guzan was named Aston Villa's player of the year. In Italy, Michael Bradley and AS Roma are into the Coppa Italia finals on May 29 and the midfielder will be late reporting to camp.

No American player, however, has had a better year than Jozy Altidore who scored 31 goals across all competitions for AZ Alkmaar including the winner in the Dutch Cup over PSV Eindhoven.

While announced weeks ago, Stuart Holden has returned to the team after an injury followed my micro-fracture surgery has forced him out of action for most of the past two years. The Bolton midfielder returned to action in January and continued to earn minutes while on a month-long loan to Sheffield Wednesday.

The United States will open the series of games with a friendly against Belgium in Cleveland on May 29.

Saw LD on Fox today. Was asked will he be in he said " probably not i'd go if called but probably not" My question is how much influence does Bruce Arena have on LD? We know he hates JK and he has refused to let players go so I feel he has a big part in LD not going. Just my opinion!

Not putting Landon Donovan on the roster for the friendlies is stupid. The point of friendlies is to answer questions about players and I can see no bigger question that the degree to which LD can contribute to the team, a question that is urgent because the three qualifiers that immediately follow the friendlies will likely determine our WC fate.

Love that Holden is getting a look! I do regret JK isn't calling in Donovan...even if he doesn't start I would like to see him get some needed minutes. We know Davis wont start then why not bring in Diskarud (spl??) or another younger player to get some higher level international experience. The rest of squad is acceptable. I am glad JK is taking these friendly matches seriously. Belgium and Germany will want to win big for momentum in WC qualifying. Let's not get embarrassed...Parkhurst is the other player I question?????
