Energie Cottbus defender Gregg Berhalter has revealed that he will not be extending his contract with the East German club.

"I will be leaving Cottbus," Berhalter told YA on Monday.

The club and player have been in negotiations for the last few weeks, but ultimately, the New Jersey native decided to ply his trade elsewhere.

"I'm staying in Germany." Berhalter revealed. "I can't let you know now [where, but] it will be announced in the next couple of days."

The promotion hero has spent the last four years with Cottbus, the last three in the 2.Bundesliga after relegation from the Bundesliga following the 2002/2003 season.

In 111 games for the club, he has scored 10 goals, none of which was more important than his last one from the spot to secure promotion.

Berhalter has also worn the captain's armband for the last two seasons.
