KENYA BROWN - Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Former USMNT defender Cory Gibbs announced his retirement on Monday after an 12-year injury-plagued playing career.

The former Brown University Brown Bear is remembered for his playing time in Europe which started with FC St. Pauli in the German Bundesliga in 2001. In his first season with the team, Gibbs made history when he became the youngest American to score a goal in Germany's top league against FC Cologne. After successive relegations, the Florida native returned to the US where he played with the FC Dallas for a season.

Another European odyssey began for the defender as he was signed by Holland's Feyenoord in 2005 where he played in 15 games before suffering a knee injury ended his time in Rotterdam. Early in 2006 the recovered Gibbs moved to Den Haag on loan which earned him a contract with Charlton Athletic in England.

However, injuries prevented him from playing a single game for the Addicks during his two years with the team and Gibbs returned to MLS where he played for Colorado, New England and the Chicago Fire in his final seasons.

On the international front, the 32-year-old made his first appearance for the US in June 2003 against New Zealand. After returning stateside in 2004, he saw more time as he was called up numerous times during the national team's qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup.

Selected for the 2006 World Cup team, the injury bug caught Gibbs again and he was replaced on the roster by Gregg Berhalter.

Gibbs bids farwell to the game having made 19 appearances for the United States national team.
