JAMIE HILL - Wednesday, October 19, 2011
AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek announced today that Jozy Altidore will not start tomorrow's Europa League against Austria Vienna

The Dutchman criticized Altidore's recent efforts on and off the field in comments to the local press. Verbeek, who is known as a strict disciplinarian, had previously expressed his displeasure with the forward's lack of fitness.

Despite issues with match fitness, Altidore has produced seven goals across all competitions this season for AZ.

This incident is not the first time Altidore has run into trouble with a manager. He was left out of the squad by Phil Brown after arriving late for a match with Hull City in October 2009.

After hearing about this for a year or two now, it really is disappointing that one of the best american forward prospects and current national team starter has this issue coming up again and again. Only when the us has a formidable forward with at least a good, if not an amazing work ethic will they be able to score goals at a consistent level. He just seems not to get that football is a job and not just a hobby. Too many people are counting on him and are hoping he succeeds for this to keep happening.

I too think Jozy needs to get his day to day work ethic in check. Having followed his carreer from the beginning, imo, it's safe to say he has some attitude and work-ethic issues here. If he had Jay Demerit's work-rate and tenacity, he would be still be with Villareal. That said, I think we all need to remember some of his national team efforts, specifically, last world cup. He may not have scored, but he gave an absolutely collosol effort the last two matches, and he there is no doubt in my mind he left everything on the field.

I read in an article which quoted the manager before their game vs vienna and he said it was about rest as well. he said he rests he best players, telling them before game that they will not be playing. not saying jozy is one of their best, but still, quotes from that article didn't seem to be this worrying. come on jozy, make us proud boy

Yah, he was like this in England and got dumped. Every where he has been his work rate is suspect. Grow up Josey or go back to MLS. You make it that much harder for other USMNT to get a team. Shut your yap and work harder. That says it all.

Apparently, Jozy thinks he's better than he is.

what an idiot! how can you finally can some playing time and then be lazy!!! this is an amazing chance to show bigger clubs what he can do and he is ruining it. i think Klinsmann should not call him up so he can fully understand that it's not just about the club but also the country he represents.

i think things may get over exaggerated sometimes, maybe we shouldn't jump all over jozy because we aren't there so how can we know whats going on for sure.

I'd like to see the statements or whatever where the coach is caught expressing these things before i take this seriously. Cause on Jozy's tweeter, he's saying everythings fine.

This is really sad. This happened at RBNY, Hull and now AZ. Probably was an issue at Villareal. Jozy needs to get his act together!
