DAVIES RETURNS TO COMPETITIVE ACTION
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Wednesday, July 7, 2010
Charlie Davies took another important step in his long road to recovery from a horrific car accident that nearly ended both his career and life.

Davies, 24, started Sochaux's first preseason game against Swiss Super League club Neuchatel Xamax. The game was only scheduled to be 45 minutes and it finished 0-0 after which Xamax won on penalties.

For Davies, it was his first competitive game since October 10, 2009 when he played for the US national team in their 3-2 away win over Honduras in a World Cup Qualifier. It was a win that clinched World Cup qualification for the Americans.

Sochaux has six more preseason friendlies scheduled before they begin their Ligue 1 season on August 7 against newly promoted team AC Arles-Avignon.

Bobby, McBride is not the best US striker anymore , sorry. He's just too old to even be put in a category with Davies, Buddle, Gomez, or a 20yr old Altidore. At this point in his carreer, he's seeing limited playing time in MLS, though he is performing well. Don't get me wrong. Mcbride is an American legend, but his days contributing for the nats or being called America's best striker are gone. I would still have rather seen him on the World Cup squad than Findley.

You are totally right about someone needing to step up. I can still see a pairing of Altidore and Davies being very dangerous and difficult to deal with for any defense. They both need to get there acts together, find some playing time, and improve. Lets hope they do because I don't see anyone else really stepping up at striker. Maybe Dempsey should be permantley moved to that position for the nats. Hopefully the new coach will be open to this and yes we need a new coach. No doubt about that.

Someone needs to be corrected. Davies can finish. Jozy doesn't hustle enough and his ball skills(his touch in particular) are lacking a bit. However, he is only 20, showed flashes in SA, and will improve on his weak points with more experience. Davies is a fantastic player with loads of upside. He has all the tools to be a force in France and for the nats. Herc is good too. He can finish.

Our strikers don't suck(except for Findley). They just were'nt ready yet for a World Cup and in Davies case not fit. If all goes well, Jozy and Davies will tear it up in 2014.

ummm, Charlie Davies is most certainly not overrated.

He proved, without a doubt, in his brief tenure that he's the most dynamic striker the US has ever had, period.

Not accomplished, as in Brian McBride, but dynamic as in scares the living hell out of opposing defenses. I've been watching the USMNT since 1990 and we've never had a striker that makes world class defenders play tentative like he does.

It's not always about the goals it's about what you bring to the table: like space for the wings to operate, less attention on Landon defensively, Jozy to have just a little more room up top or in my opinion the biggest thing CD9 brought was an infectious enthusiasm and a "i don't give a damn what nation you play for i'm going to attack you all day" attitude.

We've never had a forward with his kind of pace and confidence. Altidore is not as explosive and they work great off of each other, making each other better. I thought Findley did ok and he has the pace but his touch and confidence are sorely lacking.

Please stay off Charlie's nuts, he doesn't need your approval, just admiration.

That's a sobering take but you overlook one big incentive to lie: protect your investment.

CHARLIE DAVIES IS OVERRATED!!!
Im so tired of people like Pedro saying "all he has done for the National team!"

Here is a guy, who before last summer had NEVER started for US or played any meaniful mins. In the first 2 Confed Games he didnt start.

In an act of desperation Bradley starts Davies against Egypt, he gets a scrappy goal that was really made by Jozy ball fake...then has a nice assist against Brazil and scores a goal against Mexico.

AND FOR THIS HE IS THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD FOR US? He has started less than a dozen games...and is a decent player, with potential and i like his heart. Lets not get carried away!!!!

doesnt really matter who we put up top, other than New Zealand we probably had the worst strikers in the entire tournament.

I'm as big a Davies as everyone else, but I think it was pretty clear he wasn't anywhere near ready for the World Cup. Think about it, the only "positive" news we had in April and May was from CD's Twitter account, and what was he going to say? That he wasn't ready? Of course his twitter posts were overly optimistic. They had to be for his own sanity/recovery.

After seeing Gooch (one of my favorites as well) struggle mightily to keep in the WC, how do you an unfit CD would have done?

The doctors, both French and American, had no reason to lie to their teams. I think they got it right. It was us fans, I'm guilty too, that irrationally overplayed CD's recovery.

That said, go get after it this season CD9! (Gooch too....)

Whether Davies was better than Findley or Buddle wasn't the point of him not being given a spot on the Cup roster. He JUST played his first 45 minutes since last October... That's a big step, which is being made clear. People making big steps in recovery aren't really useful in World Cup rosters.

I was a little surprised he didn't get called into camp. I think his public relations campain and overestimation of his recovery where more than Bradley wanted to deal with.

Wow are you seriously question whether Davies was better than Findley before the accident. Findley has yet to score a single goal or even make an assist. He hasn't even earned a starting spot on his MLS team let a Ligue 1 team. Findley doesn't has come any where close to where Findley was before the accident.

Buddle is very good. He's more comparable to Altidore. He wouldn't fill the same role that Davies did. I would have liked to see Buddle play more and Findley play a lot less. Our best formation was with Dempsey or Donovan upfront and Feilhaber and Edu in the midfeild. For some reason we only used it when we had already dug a whole for ourselves.
