Cortez's soccer odyssey would start in his native California where he played in high school and club team before spending one year at the University of California, Berkeley.
Following his single college season, he would go on to sign a contract with the now defunct Chivas USA in Major League Soccer, joining their academy team. In 2010, he went for try out with Pachuca of Liga MX but would return later to join Chivas USA's first team.
After being released by Chivas in February 2012, Cortez would go down a division to the USL Championship where he signed for the Orange County Blues. In 63 games for the team, he would go on to score 20 goals.
In March 2016, he would be on the move again. This time he would sign on with fellow USL Championship team Phoenix Rising FC. The 2018 season would be the best he had so far as a professional as he scored 19 goals in 33 games, setting a club record. At the end of the season he decided not to renew his contract as he looked to try his luck outside of the United States.
Cortez would head to Asia in 2019 where he signed a contract with Chonburi FC in Thailand's League 1. However, he would not stay with the team very long as they shipped him out on loan to Ayutthaya United in the country's second division.
Following a brief stay in the Southeast Asian country, Cortez headed to Denmark to sign a deal with FC Helsingor in the third tier.
After spending a season in Denmark, Cortez moved to the Czech Republic to sign with 1. FK Pribram in the country's top tier.
Cortez has not represented the United States at any level.
