Holmes' professional career started in 2013, where signed with English Championship side Huddersfield Town, the team where he also trained as a youth player. He would make his debut for the team in the Football League Cup game against Hull City in September 2013. He made his league debut against Blackpool three days later. He would also see playing time out on loan with Yeovil Town and Bury respectively.
In June 2016, it was reported that Holmes signed a contract with League One side Scunthorpe United.
Following two seasons with the Iron, Holmes made a return to the Championship when he signed for Derby County in August 2018.
After finding playing time hard to come by, Holmes made a return to Huddersfield Town in January 2021.
Eligible to represent both England and the United States, Holmes has chosen to play for the latter.
He would make his debut for the U.S. national team in June 2019 against Jamaica. This led to him being named on the 23-man roster for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, he had to withdraw later due to an injury.
