Patterson-Sewell was born in Tennessee, but grew up in Australia. He spent several teenage years in academies in England and Belgium, but eventually returned to Australia.
In 2007, he signed with the Cleveland City Stars, a third division American club. The following season, he moved to MLS and spent the season as a backup goalkeeper with New York, but never played.
In 2009, Patterson-Sewell signed with the Carolina RailHawks in the second division, where he found playing time to be in greater abundance. He spent the 2010 season as Miami FC's starting goalkeeper.
While Patterson-Sewell returned to Carolina in 2011, he departed midway through the season, joining Atlético CP of the Portugal's Liga de Honra.
Patterson-Sewell immediately seized the starting job once in Portugal and impressed with his performances, registering eight clean sheets in his first eleven matches. While Atlético's performances cooled off, scouting reports on the goalkeeper did not. After the season, he was scooped up by Vitória Setúbal in the Portuguese Superliga.
Patterson-Sewell enters the 2012-13 season in hopes of securing a starting role at his new club.
Patterson-Sewell holds American and Australian passports, but has not represented either country.
