Michael Bradley went 90 minutes in midfield as Heerenveen advanced to the UEFA Cup playoff final thanks to an own goal by Roda JC defender Vincent Lachambre.
The wingback slid a Daniel Pranjic centering feed into his own net just before the half hour to provide the Frisians with the only goal of the two-leg tie.
Bradley, making his third consecutive start for the first team, worked from left midfield in a 4-3-3 formation.
Heerenveen will now tackle FC Twente for a place in Europe, with the opener set for Sunday at Arke and the return for Wednesday at the friendly confines of Abe Lenstra.
Should the northerners succeed on aggregate, they will make their third UEFA Cup appearance in four years.
