According to the club, Mainz 05 striker Conor Casey will leave with his teammates Sunday for winter camp in Almancil, Portugal and stands an outside chance of being available to manager Jürgen Klopp when they resume Bundesliga play on January 28th.
The US international, who had two goals in 30 appearances during his debut season with Mainz, is drawing close to a return to first team training.
"He is exercising with the squad, but has not joined the full program yet," an assistant to press officer Tobias Sparwasser told YA. "He will fly to camp with the group, and will start on a special program."
"He could be ready to join the team by the first match after the winter break, theoretically."
Casey has not played since suffering an ACL injury during last summer's Gold Cup-opening rout of Cuba, but remains intent on finding club form to re-enter Bruce Arena's World Cup frame.
German reports recently surfaced that suggest 2.Bundesliga promotion hopefuls Greuther Fürth were interested in bringing the forward over with the promise of playing time, but SpVgg president Helmut Hach insisted that his outfit were 'not a borrowing club'.
Either way, Mainz were not interested in discussing the possibility of a Casey departure at this time.
"There is nothing decided," the press liason commented. "We have read the papers too, but we don't want to speak on such things until it is time to announce something."
